Yellow journalism watch: Fox 'News'.com today -- 1/3/19

(Commentary, including reposted material.)
Blogger note: We're going to try a little new feature here for a few days (or so) and see how it goes. This commentary series may subsequently be moved to a slightly larger-audience web outlet if it seems worthwhile...(Link to be provided.) Note: Today's featured item can be found further below. (Parental guidance suggested.)

We need to begin with a few basic definitions and stipulations:

A definition of "yellow journalism", copied from Wikipedia
"Yellow journalism and the yellow press are American terms for journalism and associated newspapers that present little or no legitimate well-researched news while instead using eye-catching headlines for increased sales. Techniques may include exaggerations of news events, scandal-mongering, or sensationalism. By extension, the term yellow journalism is used today as a pejorative to decry any journalism that treats news in an unprofessional or unethical fashion."
Another definition of yellow journalism, reposted. Source is linked:
"the use of cheaply sensational or unscrupulous methods in newspapers, etc. to attract or influence readers"

A second definition (excerpted): "What makes journalism different than other forms of communication?":
(Excerpt:)
"...While journalism occupies a much smaller space than the talk, entertainment, opinion, assertion, advertising and propaganda that dominate the media universe, it is nevertheless perceived as being more valuable than most of the “stuff out there.”
That value flows from its purpose, to provide people with verified information they can use to make better decisions, and its practices, the most important of which is a systematic process – a discipline of verification – that journalists use to find not just the facts, but also the “truth about the facts.”"

A couple of conditions or additional requirements for this blog:

-- The article/photo/video reposted and featured here must be prominently displayed at or near the top of the https://www.foxnews.com/ webpage (- no affiliation here -) for at least an hour's time on any particular day. Note that foxnews.com regularly changes what is prominently broadcast at or near the top of their webpage throughout the day -- so readers will often have to take my 'word' about this.  (A link to the subject article will be provided, but no 'guarantees ' as to how long that link will function.)
P.S. We are not going to examine the Fox 'News' television channel's content here.

-- The article reposted and featured here is not/was not clearly and unambiguously labeled as 'commentary', 'opinion', a 'feature', or a regular commentary 'column'. In other words, the story reposted here is not/was not clearly labeled as something other than a "news" presentation. E.g., so (that) a person unfamiliar with foxnews.com could easily identify it as something other than news reporting..

-- The published headline of the reposted and featured foxnews.com story will regularly be considered here as a key component of (perceived) sensationalist reporting, unscrupulous presentation, etc.

-- It's currently the opinion of this blog-writer that Fox 'news'/foxnews.com regularly and blatantly 'mixes'-together opinion/commentary within purported (- or misclassified or improperly labeled -) news articles. (Presented under the banner of a major broadcast 'news' outlet.) We're going to learn whether at least some of this proves out or not.

-- I'll probably include a short comment here as to why we think the day's reposted story qualifies as 'yellow journalism', or very close to 'yellow journalism'..(BTW: Only ONE foxnews.com story will be selected for each post, even though there might be a number from which to choose.)

Comment: Out of many, two of my chief objections to this piece are: 1) its (former) top-center (- "first story above the 'fold' (or break)", if you will -) placement on the foxnews.com webpage (featuring a sensational, opinion-expressing headline), and 2), the ambiguous, not-defined 'Socialism' "topic" designation (for the story).

As originally published I could not find a 'commentary' or 'opinion' label for this story.... though much of the article seems rife with that...
