An insider's report presented by a blog that regularly pulls 'facts' from the same places that Sarah H. Sanders usually does...: "Honey, wasn't that our neighbor Roger Stone getting arrested?"

(Commentary, including reposted material. Temporarily posted.)

...↓This federally charged perpetrator (--alleged --) actually turned his FBI arrest into a bizarre media event ....

...................................................................................................................................................................

For the rest of us: A bit of analysis from outside of bizarro Trump/Republican fringe nut-job world:
"...The approach to this arrest makes clear that Roger Stone and possibly his attorneys have done something provocative enough to make the usually low profile and careful special prosecutor extraordinarily angry. Stone was not afforded the customary voluntary surrender option usually seen in white collar criminal cases. Most likely, the raid was intended to send a clear message to other witnesses and potential defendants that witness tampering, a federal felony with a sentence of up to 20 years if it involves physical intimidation, will not be tolerated by the polite but tough former FBI director. The other five counts in the indictment each carry hefty potential sentences of as much as five years each, subjecting Stone to a maximum exposure of 45 years in an ill-fitting federal jumpsuit.
The conduct which likely prompted the use of an FBI arrest team worthy of a Navy SEAL operation can be found in an incredibly stupid and highly incriminating series of messages allegedly sent to the indictment's "Person 2" (reported to be comedian and radio personality Randy Credico) seeking to influence and shape "Person 2's" congressional testimony...."

(By hook or by crook,) Donald Trump parlayed his family's money into great wealth. That makes him much better and smarter than everyone else -- especially any government employee:

"...The Civil Service relies to a large degree on good will. No matter how vital high-skilled federal workers are to the functioning of government, there are usually companies willing to offer them much higher salaries — double or even triple in some cases — on top of the free lunches and stock options. As student debt soars and private sector opportunities multiply, the sheer allure of public service — “the mission,” as NASA researchers often put it — is what keeps a lot of talent in the government.
The longest shutdown in the country’s history is eroding that good will, already wearing thin after years of pay freezes, unpredictable budgets, and disdain from even the White House for government workers as swamp creatures or worse...."

Today's selected video was actually broadcast on Fox News television yesterday, 1/6/19.

Brief comment: Large news organization Fox 'News' employs at least a few, actual news professionals and journalists. Generally speaking, Chris Wallace is clearly one of those people

Sarah Huckabee Sanders shows us once again that she is currently one thing, and one thing only:

Yellow journalism watch: Fox 'News'.com today -- 1/5/19. (Plus additional commentary.)

(Commentary, including reposted material.)
Blogger note: We're going to try a little new feature here for a few days (or so) and see how it goes. This commentary series may subsequently be moved to a slightly larger-audience web outlet if it seems worthwhile...(Link to be provided.)
One definition of 'yellow journalism' (source is linked): "the use of cheaply sensational or unscrupulous methods in newspapers, etc. to attract or influence readers"

....................................................................................

Before looking at today's sample foxnews.com article (see further below), a brief observation:

Excerpt from a 1/5/19 CNN news story, as reported:
"President Donald Trump told congressional leaders during a meeting Friday to try to negotiate terms to re-open the government and that he preferred the word "strike" in describing the ongoing government shutdown, a person familiar with the meeting and a Democratic aide told CNN.
Trump also kicked off the meeting with a profanity laden opening salvo lasting more than 15 minutes in which he made it clear that he had no plans to move on from his demand for $5.6 billion to build a border wall, according to a person familiar with the meeting.
Trump also addressed the issue of impeachment, directing his remarks at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, according to two people familiar with what happened inside the room. Pelosi, in response, told him the meeting was supposed to be about re-opening the government, not impeachment, the people said...."
--- Source link. No affiliation.
.................................................

Comment: As reported, Donald Trump's actions personify the adjectives egotistical (def. link) and arrogant (def. link). To attempt to characterize the Trump-induced government shutdown as a "strike" is demagoguery (and falsification to a disgraceful degree..

Further: Understanding that Democratic leaders apparently were present at the meeting (in good faith) to discuss -- and perhaps negotiate about -- the Trump government shutdown: Democratic leaders should have either repeatedly interrupted Trump's "profane" 15-minute "opening salvo"/power-play -- when it became apparent, or briefly stepped out of the room, to perhaps force a child-disciplining "timeout" upon the ranting demagogue. (Democratic) congressional leaders are not the president's "underlings". (Or sycophants.) No professional organizational leaders in today's world would be "expected" to sit through such a thing.
..Just walk out....for a few minutes... and let the "baby" complete his tantrum without an adult audience present....
Oh, BTW, Democratic congressional leaders↓:

................................................................................................................................

Comment: In my humble opinion, yeah....this sample (above) cuts a little too close to tabloid-style, "yellow journalism". Main reasons? The over-emphasis upon the "I reject your facts" reported statement, which is likely taken out-of-context, and may not be a complete accounting of the words actually uttered.

Also, especially for a prominently featured news article that includes assertions by multiple parties, there does not appear to be any associated fact-checking portion to the story, or a separate fact-check article published on the same portion of the page.

Here is an example of the type of fact-checking examination that I would look for -- and expect:

.................................................................................................................................

Noting that I'm not a journalism expert or professor, or similar: Here are at least three reasons why I do NOT have much of any 'problem' with this article, or its presentation:

1) Reading the full article, my impression is that it is - in essence - written as a 'straight' news reporting article. There could be some subtle bias in a few of it's choices here or there, but no more (in my experience) than many other news articles written by/for other outlets. There may be a slight 'slant' to what's emphasized in the story, but there is really no blatant opinion or commentary interspersed with news reporting within it. (Note that it's indicated (at the end) that "....The Associated Press contributed to this report.")

2) The article has a fairly 'normal-sized' headline, for its position on the page. The headline also sticks to news conveying; no obvious opinion-expressing this time..

3) Impeachment is generally a polarizing issue currently within the U.S. The Democratic representative's vulgar public comments: Also controversial... and newsworthy (especially given the issue, its subject person (i.e., Pres. Trump)), etc.. Speaker Pelosi's reaction? Kind of "on-the-fence", and could be received (at least) a couple of different ways.
The story is of current national interest and has stirring elements  -- which means it's being reported by large news outlets. (..Sometimes with their own apparent 'slant' (or overall bias) applied...) The article's temporary lead position on foxnews.com's page seems appropriate, for the moment..

Yellow journalism watch: Fox 'News'.com today -- 1/3/19

(Commentary, including reposted material.)
Blogger note: We're going to try a little new feature here for a few days (or so) and see how it goes. This commentary series may subsequently be moved to a slightly larger-audience web outlet if it seems worthwhile...(Link to be provided.) Note: Today's featured item can be found further below. (Parental guidance suggested.)

We need to begin with a few basic definitions and stipulations:

A definition of "yellow journalism", copied from Wikipedia
"Yellow journalism and the yellow press are American terms for journalism and associated newspapers that present little or no legitimate well-researched news while instead using eye-catching headlines for increased sales. Techniques may include exaggerations of news events, scandal-mongering, or sensationalism. By extension, the term yellow journalism is used today as a pejorative to decry any journalism that treats news in an unprofessional or unethical fashion."
Another definition of yellow journalism, reposted. Source is linked:
"the use of cheaply sensational or unscrupulous methods in newspapers, etc. to attract or influence readers"

A second definition (excerpted): "What makes journalism different than other forms of communication?":
(Excerpt:)
"...While journalism occupies a much smaller space than the talk, entertainment, opinion, assertion, advertising and propaganda that dominate the media universe, it is nevertheless perceived as being more valuable than most of the “stuff out there.”
That value flows from its purpose, to provide people with verified information they can use to make better decisions, and its practices, the most important of which is a systematic process – a discipline of verification – that journalists use to find not just the facts, but also the “truth about the facts.”"
-- Source article link. (No affiliation.)

A couple of conditions or additional requirements for this blog:

-- The article/photo/video reposted and featured here must be prominently displayed at or near the top of the https://www.foxnews.com/ webpage (- no affiliation here -) for at least an hour's time on any particular day. Note that foxnews.com regularly changes what is prominently broadcast at or near the top of their webpage throughout the day -- so readers will often have to take my 'word' about this.  (A link to the subject article will be provided, but no 'guarantees ' as to how long that link will function.)
P.S. We are not going to examine the Fox 'News' television channel's content here.

-- The article reposted and featured here is not/was not clearly and unambiguously labeled as 'commentary', 'opinion', a 'feature', or a regular commentary 'column'. In other words, the story reposted here is not/was not clearly labeled as something other than a "news" presentation. E.g., so (that) a person unfamiliar with foxnews.com could easily identify it as something other than news reporting..

-- The published headline of the reposted and featured foxnews.com story will regularly be considered here as a key component of (perceived) sensationalist reporting, unscrupulous presentation, etc.

-- It's currently the opinion of this blog-writer that Fox 'news'/foxnews.com regularly and blatantly 'mixes'-together opinion/commentary within purported (- or misclassified or improperly labeled -) news articles. (Presented under the banner of a major broadcast 'news' outlet.) We're going to learn whether at least some of this proves out or not.

-- I'll probably include a short comment here as to why we think the day's reposted story qualifies as 'yellow journalism', or very close to 'yellow journalism'..(BTW: Only ONE foxnews.com story will be selected for each post, even though there might be a number from which to choose.)

↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓

Here is a current link to the entire article (new window opens):
https://www.foxnews.com/politics/socialism-rising-dems-take-house-pushing-massive-government-expansion-as-party-lurches-left

Comment: Out of many, two of my chief objections to this piece are: 1) its (former) top-center (- "first story above the 'fold' (or break)", if you will -) placement on the foxnews.com webpage (featuring a sensational, opinion-expressing headline), and 2), the ambiguous, not-defined 'Socialism' "topic" designation (for the story).

As originally published I could not find a 'commentary' or 'opinion' label for this story.... though much of the article seems rife with that...
