(Subsequent comment: The applause above seemed like kind of a nice moment...But now "spontaneous" applause seems to be occurring a little more during the hearings (link).
I believe that audience applause (etc.) should be "gaveled down" and not encouraged in a public congressional hearing. (E.g.: It can appear (to be) partisan in nature..) At least some of that is "on" (i.e., the responsibility of?) the committee chairperson I believe...)
